A 22-year-old student of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, Owo (RUGIPO), Ondo State, Chukwudi Oweniwe, has been arrested for allegedly killing his girlfriend, Nifemi Adeyeye, in a bush at Ilu-Abo in Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
Chukwudi and Nifemi were both Part Time (PT) Three students of the Department of Science and Laboratory Technology (SLT).
The suspect, who lives at Ayede-Ogbese, allegedly invited the deceased to his place from school and lured her into a bush in Ilu-Abo, where he killed her. He was alleged to have performed some devilish acts on his late girlfriend.
Paraded before reporters at the police command in Akure, the state capital, Chukwudi confessed to the crime, but denied conducting ritual acts on the victim. He narrated how he killed her. “I invited her from Owo to Ayede-Ogbese, and after introducing her to my parents, I lured her into a bush and strangled her
leaving her body in the bush,” he said. “On the second day, I asked a commercial motorcycle rider to take me to the bush where I left her and observed that she was not dead. I used a stone to hit her head and she died immediately.
“My parents became curious when they did not see her. I was arrested by the police in Ayede Ogbese, and from there, they transferred me to the Special Anti-cultism Squad in Akure.”
Asked why he killed his girlfriend, Chukwudi said that he did not know what came over him, and that it was when he killed her that he realised that he had committed a sin. He denied being a cultist.
He said that he and the deceased had dated since February, 2016 and that she has never cheated on him.
The State Police commissioner, Mrs. Hilda Ibifuro-Harrison, said Nifemi’s remains were recovered in the bush by men of the Special Anti-cultism Squad. She said that the police are still investigating the matter to unravel the suspect’s action. She added that he would be charged to court as soon as investigation is completed.
The police also paraded suspects arrested for different offences.
