Police in China, have released surveillance videos, showing a man robbing a woman at an ATM.
However, things were not as simple as they seemed.
Police in Nanjing, said that the suspect was drunk when he spotted a woman, who he thought was his female friend.
He decided to play a joke on her and rob her from behind to scare her just for fun. However, the woman at the ATM was not his friend and the terrified victim called police to report that she was robbed.
Police said that the victim named, Zhang, was taking out money from an ATM when the man walked up to her and stole her wallet. As the woman backed away from the machine, the suspect got a better look at her and realized that he had made a mistake.
The man was seen on video placing his hand on his mouth in shock, and he immediately apologized to the victim and returned her possessions.
Police took him into custody and conducted an investigation.
Police said that they called the suspect’s friend to come over to the police station so they can compare her looks with that of Zhang to see if one can confused them when seeing them from behind.
After police determined that the women look alike and surveillance video showed the man apologizing to his victim immediately after realizing his mistake, they allowed him to walk free without any charges.
