A young driver was killed while leading police on a high-speed chase.

The high school student of New Zealand, died in a car accident while trying to flee from police after she was seen speeding and driving erratically, police said.

17-year-old Moana Matthews had three friends in her car when police spotted her after zooming through an intersection.

When officers tried to pull her over, the teenager sped off.

She continued driving at high speeds for less than one mile when she lost control of the vehicle at a curve on the road.

The car flew through the air and into a shallow creek, ending the chase. Sadly, the fun for the teenagers ended when Matthews died in the crash.

Her three friends were treated for minor injuries.

Rotorua Area Commander Inspector Bruce Horne said that the accident was “heart-breaking” and that the incident is being investigated.

“This is a tragedy for the families involved and our thoughts are with them at this time. This incident highlights the risk of speeding and the tragic consequences that can result when a driver refuses to stop and chooses to evade the police,” Horne said.
