Retired teacher arrested for ‘insulting Turkish president’ on social media

A retired teacher was arrested on July 22 on charges of insulting President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan over social media in the Şarköy district of the northwestern province of Tekirdağ.


Police
detained the retired teacher, identified only as Sevim Ö., over posts
she made on one of her social media accounts. She was later referred to a
local court.

During the trial, Sevim Ö. said she did not know her posts constituted a crime.

“I regret my posts. I did not know they constituted a crime. I apologize,” Sevim Ö reportedly said.

The court ordered the arrest of the retired teacher on charges of insulting the president.

Meanwhile, police also detained one other person also living in Şarköy for insulting the president on social media.

The
man, identified as Yılmaz B., was referred to court after giving his
testimony but was released while an investigation into the incident is
ongoing.
