A government official was arrested on a charge of money laundering
after being caught dumping millions of dollars at a church to the
surprise of priests and nuns, according to police in Argentina.
Buenos Aires police said that they have arrested Deputy Public Works
Minister Jose Lopez, after being accused of dumping suitcases stuffed
with $10 million at the Our Lady of Fatima Catholic monastery.
According to the police, nuns at the church called 911 to report that a
man tossed suitcases over a fence. Within minutes of the call, police
arrested Lopez.
Lopez told the nuns that he had planned to donate the money to the
church. The suitcases were confiscated by the police, and they were
found to contain $10 million in different currencies.
The cash was in dollars, euros, yen and Qatar. Lopez had a rifle with
him when he was arrested. He tried to bribe one of the officers, but was
rejected.
