An aunt and her niece were arrested on a charge of elder abuse after an
85-year-old woman was found unresponsive and covered in bugs, according
to police in Arkansas.
The Fayetteville Police Department said that they have arrested
75-year-old Rose Mary Austin and 54-year-old Evelyn Schafer, after the
85-year-old woman was rushed to the Washington Regional Medical Center.
Austin is the sister of the elderly woman and Schafer is her daughter.
According to the police investigation, the two suspects and the victim
lived together in a home located on North Green Acres Road.
Around 12:00 a.m. on Sunday, the two suspects called the police to report that the 85-year-old woman was not breathing.
Paramedics and police officers who arrived at the scene, found the
victim completely covered in feces and socks were stuck to her feet.
She had lacerations on her legs and had live maggots in the wounds.
Police said that it was very clear that this was a serious case of elder
abuse.
Austin and Schafer told police that the victim fell last week, and they
placed her on the sofa. She did not move or speak until two days later.
The victim had to be placed on a ventilator and hospital staff said she will never regain the ability to breathe on her own.
